Service overview

What block paving involves — and why it matters.

What it is

Block paving for driveways, patios, side paths and access ways — including concrete blocks (Marshalls Drivesett, Tobermore, Brett), permeable block paving for SuDS compliance, and clay paviours for character properties.

Who it's for

Homeowners in West Sussex wanting a defined, premium driveway or path finish, replacing sunken or weed-ridden block paving, and properties needing permeable surfacing to comply with planning rules.

When you need it

Replace existing block paving showing sinking, lifting, cracked blocks, vegetation through the joints or movement at the edges. Build new when upgrading a tarmac driveway or shingle path.

Why professional help matters

Block paving fails in predictable ways: weak sub-base, no edge restraint, or wrong jointing sand. Get those three right and a block paving driveway is a 25+ year surface. Get any one wrong and it'll need re-laying in 5.

What happens if you delay

The cost of getting this wrong.

Block paving that's failing rarely fails in the middle — it fails at the edges and at the sub-base.

Risks of ignoring it

  • Blocks creeping outward and the centre sinking under vehicle weight.
  • Weeds and moss colonising joints where the wrong sand was used or never re-topped.
  • Lifted blocks causing trip hazards on garden paths and access ways.
  • Standing water against the house wall when falls were never engineered in.
  • Re-lay cost in year five exceeding the price of doing it properly today.

Common mistakes

  • Laying on a sand-only sub-base instead of compacted Type 1.
  • Skipping the concrete-haunched edge course.
  • Using building sand in the joints instead of kiln-dried jointing sand.
  • Choosing 50mm blocks for a driveway when 60mm is the residential minimum.

Our process

How we deliver block paving step by step.

  1. 01

    Survey & layout planning

We agree pattern (herringbone, stretcher, basket-weave), block colour and edging style, and check drainage.

  2. 02

    Written quote

Itemised: excavation, sub-base, edge restraint, blocks, jointing sand, drainage.

  3. 03

    Excavation & sub-base

Dig to depth, geotextile membrane, MOT Type 1 compacted in lifts to a structural finish.

  4. 04

    Edges & laying

Concrete-haunched edge course set first, screed bed laid, blocks laid to pattern with consistent joint width.

  5. 05

    Compact, sand & handover

Vibrating plate compaction with rubber mat, kiln-dried sand brushed in, second compaction, full sweep and 12-month workmanship guarantee.

Benefits

Why homeowners across West Sussex choose us for block paving.

Repairable

Damage one section? Lift the affected blocks, fix the sub-base, re-lay. Tarmac and concrete can't do that.

SuDS-compliant options

Permeable block paving solves planning compliance for impermeable drives over 5m².

Range of patterns & colours

Stretcher, herringbone, basket-weave or random ashlar — your driveway, your call.

Defined, premium finish

Block paving signals premium property — visible from the street.

Strong under vehicles

Properly built block paving handles family cars, vans and occasional commercial vehicles.

Lower lifetime cost

25+ year design life with simple kiln-dried sand top-ups every few years.

Specification & detail

The detail behind a block paving job done properly.

Materials, methods and variations — what actually goes into a long-lasting build.

Block types & sizes

Standard concrete blocks at 60mm thickness for residential driveways; 50mm for patios and pedestrian paths; clay paviours for character properties (more expensive but colour-fast for life); permeable block paving with widened joints filled with grit for SuDS compliance.

Laying patterns

Herringbone (45° or 90°) for maximum interlock and best vehicular performance; stretcher bond for contemporary driveways; basket-weave for traditional patios; random ashlar in mixed sizes for premium installs.

Sub-base & jointing

150mm minimum compacted MOT Type 1 for driveways, 100mm for patios. Laying course of 30mm sharp sand screeded flat. Joints filled with kiln-dried silica sand vibrated in twice, or polymeric jointing on premium installs for a weed-proof finish.

Edges & detailing

Concrete-haunched edge restraint is non-negotiable for any vehicular install. Patio edges use brick soldier courses, contrasting borders, or finish into existing hard edges. We design block layouts to minimise cuts and keep the visible joints clean.

Aftercare

Kiln-dried sand top-up every 2–3 years to maintain joint stability. Power-wash gently every 3–5 years and re-sand. Lifted or damaged blocks can be lifted, re-bedded and re-jointed — a half-day repair instead of a re-lay.

How much does block paving cost in West Sussex?+

Every block paving job is priced after we see it — in person or from photos with accurate measurements. Free quote, same or next day. Cost depends on excavation, sub-base depth, edge restraint, block spec, drainage and any permeable requirements.

How long does block paving take to install?+

A typical 40–60m² front driveway takes 5–8 working days. Larger or multi-area projects 2–3 weeks.

Will weeds grow through the joints?+

Kiln-dried sand vibrated in twice eliminates weed germination for years. Polymeric jointing eliminates it entirely on premium installs.

Can you match existing block paving?+

Often, yes — most major UK block ranges (Marshalls, Brett, Tobermore) are still in production. We'll bring samples to confirm.

How long will block paving last?+

25+ years with correct sub-base and edge restraint. We back our work with a written 12-month workmanship guarantee.

Is block paving better than resin-bound?+

Block paving is more repairable and offers more design variety. Resin-bound is faster to install and has fewer joints to maintain. We'll honestly recommend the right one for your project at the survey.

Are you insured for block paving work in West Sussex?+

Yes — £5m public liability and £5m employers' liability insurance. We'll happily share the certificate before you sign. Every job comes with a 12-month workmanship guarantee. If something's down to our work, we'll come back and put it right. What it can't cover is the stuff outside our control once we've packed up and gone (like a slab getting chipped by a dropped plant pot). If it's our workmanship, it's covered.

Do you give written quotes for block paving?+

Yes. We price every block paving job after seeing it — either an in-person visit or photos with accurate measurements. Quotes are free and back to you the same or next day. We don't publish fixed prices online because every job is different.

How do I pay?+

Cash or bank transfer. A small booking fee (around £50) holds your spot in the diary. A 50% deposit is due about a week before we start, with the remaining 50% on completion. No large upfront deposit.

Are you open at weekends?+

Yes — we're open 7 days a week and respond same day, whichever day you call.

How quickly can you start a block paving project?+

Block paving work is typically scheduled within a few weeks of accepting the quote, sometimes sooner for smaller jobs. We work year-round.

Do you work outside Littlehampton?+

Yes — we regularly work in Worthing, Angmering, Chichester, Lancing, Rustington, East Preston, Brighton and the wider West Sussex. Postcode confirms eligibility in seconds on the phone.
