Service overview

What fencing involves — and why it matters.

What it is

Full residential fencing — closeboard, feather-edge, lap, slatted contemporary screens, picket and post-and-rail — installed on concrete posts and gravel boards for genuine longevity, with proper wind loading in mind.

Who it's for

Homeowners in West Sussex replacing storm-damaged or rotten fencing, landlords needing fast secure boundary repairs, and clients planning a new garden where the fence sets the design tone.

When you need it

Replace any fence with rotten posts at the base, panels flexing in moderate wind, leaning runs, gaps your dog can squeeze through, or missing caps and gravel boards. Don't wait for the next storm — coastal West Sussex routinely sees 50mph+ gusts.

Why professional help matters

A cheap fence on timber posts set in a wheelbarrow of sloppy postcrete will lean inside two years and fall in a storm inside five. Concrete posts, slotted to take concrete gravel boards, with pressure-treated timber and properly set footings, give you a fence line that genuinely lasts 15–20 years.

What happens if you delay

The cost of getting this wrong.

A failed fence isn't just ugly — it's a security gap, a liability with a neighbour, and a recurring cost.

Risks of ignoring it

  • Insurance disputes after a fence collapses onto a neighbour's car, shed or greenhouse.
  • Pets escaping through gaps and dogs being lost or hit by traffic.
  • Loss of privacy and overlooked patios when panels blow out.
  • Buying the same cheap panels twice in five years — doubling the lifetime cost.
  • Disputes with neighbours over the legal boundary when posts move.

Common mistakes

  • Setting timber posts straight into wet concrete without a stone base — guarantees rot at ground level.
  • Skipping gravel boards so panels sit in damp soil.
  • Using untreated softwood "for the look" and refusing to stain it.
  • Spanning long runs without a wind-rated panel choice on exposed coastal plots.

Our process

How we deliver fencing step by step.

  1. 01

    Site survey & line check

We mark the boundary line, agree the "good side", check for underground services and discuss height, style and gate positions.

  2. 02

    Written quote

Itemised: post type, panel spec, gravel boards, gates, ironmongery, waste removal of old fence.

  3. 03

    Strip-out & post setting

Old fence removed, posts dug to a minimum 600mm with stone base then set in postmix, plumb and string-lined for a dead-straight run.

  4. 04

    Panels & gates fitted

Concrete gravel boards in, panels or feather-edge boards fitted, gates hung and aligned, caps and finials installed.

  5. 05

    Snag, tidy & guarantee

Full site tidy, off-cuts removed, walk-round with you and a written 12-month workmanship guarantee.

Benefits

Why homeowners across West Sussex choose us for fencing.

Survives coastal wind

Concrete-posted runs hold panels flat through West Sussex's winter storms.

No rot at the base

Concrete gravel boards keep timber off wet soil — the single biggest cause of fence failure.

Dead-straight lines

String-lined and plumbed posts give a clean, premium-looking boundary.

Lower lifetime cost

One properly built fence outlasts three cheap replacements.

Privacy & security

Full-height closeboard removes overlooking and stops casual access.

Neighbour-friendly install

We coordinate access and timings politely with neighbours where the work needs it.

Specification & detail

The detail behind a fencing job done properly.

Materials, methods and variations — what actually goes into a long-lasting build.

Fence styles we install

Closeboard (also known as featheredge) for maximum privacy and longevity; lap-panel for budget replacements; horizontal slatted screens for contemporary gardens; tongue-and-groove for premium privacy; picket for front gardens; post-and-rail for paddocks and rural boundaries in the Chichester and West Sussex Downs area.

Posts & footings

We default to concrete slotted posts (intermediate and end-of-run) on every standard install. Where a timber-post look is specifically requested we use pressure-treated UC4-grade timber on Met-Posts or in concrete with a 100mm stone drainage layer underneath. Footings are dug to a minimum 600mm — deeper on tall or exposed runs.

Gates & ironmongery

Single pedestrian gates, double driveway gates, side-access gates with self-closing hinges and key-locking drop bolts. We use galvanised, powder-coated hardware that won't bleed rust streaks down your new panels.

Height, planning & boundary law

Standard maximum without planning permission is 2m to a rear/side garden boundary, 1m where the fence borders a highway. We'll flag anything that needs neighbour discussion or a planning enquiry before quoting.

Aftercare

Pressure-treated timber benefits from a quality oil-based stain every 2–3 years to maintain colour and water resistance. We can quote staining as an annual service or supply the spec for you to do yourself.

FAQ

Fencing questions, straight answers.

Still unsure? Call 07743 066824 for a same-day answer.

How much does a new fence cost in West Sussex?+

We price every fence after seeing the line — either in person or from clear photos with measurements. Free quote, same or next day. Final cost depends on height, panel spec, posts, gravel boards, ground conditions and any gate or stripout work.

How long does a fence installation take?+

A standard 20–30m garden boundary is usually a 2–3 day job from strip-out to handover. Larger perimeters with gates and corner posts take 4–6 days.

Can you fit a fence in winter?+

Yes. We install year-round; only sustained heavy frost stops us digging post holes, and we'll reschedule rather than rush a bad footing.

Do you remove the old fence?+

Yes — strip-out, breakout of old concrete footings and licensed waste disposal are all included in the written quote.

Whose side does the "good side" face?+

Convention in the UK is that the smooth side faces your neighbour, but there's no legal requirement. We'll confirm your preference at the survey.

How long will the fence last?+

A concrete-posted closeboard fence with pressure-treated timber, gravel boards and a regular stain should comfortably last 15–20 years.

Are you insured for fencing work in West Sussex?+

Yes — £5m public liability and £5m employers' liability insurance. We'll happily share the certificate before you sign. Every job comes with a 12-month workmanship guarantee. If something's down to our work, we'll come back and put it right. What it can't cover is the stuff outside our control once we've packed up and gone (like a slab getting chipped by a dropped plant pot). If it's our workmanship, it's covered.

Do you give written quotes for fencing?+

Yes. We price every fencing job after seeing it — either an in-person visit or photos with accurate measurements. Quotes are free and back to you the same or next day. We don't publish fixed prices online because every job is different.

How do I pay?+

Cash or bank transfer. A small booking fee (around £50) holds your spot in the diary. A 50% deposit is due about a week before we start, with the remaining 50% on completion. No large upfront deposit.

Are you open at weekends?+

Yes — we're open 7 days a week and respond same day, whichever day you call.

How quickly can you start a fencing project?+

Fencing work is typically scheduled within a few weeks of accepting the quote, sometimes sooner for smaller jobs. We work year-round.

Do you work outside Littlehampton?+

Yes — we regularly work in Worthing, Angmering, Chichester, Lancing, Rustington, East Preston, Brighton and the wider West Sussex. Postcode confirms eligibility in seconds on the phone.
