Service overview

What pergolas involves — and why it matters.

What it is

Custom-built pergolas designed and built around your garden, your patio and how you want to use the space. Every pergola is bespoke — we don't work to a catalogue or a fixed range, so the design conversation starts on site after we've seen the spot.

Who it's for

Homeowners in West Sussex who want a permanent covered zone in the garden — for dining, lounging, a hot tub or as part of a wider redesign — and want it built around the property rather than dropped in from a kit.

When you need it

Pergolas can be built year-round. Spring and early summer are the most popular windows so the structure is ready for the season — a winter build means it's ready the moment the weather turns.

Why professional help matters

A budget flatpack pergola sat on a patio with no proper footings won't survive a winter on the south coast. A pergola built properly — anchored, sized for the span, and finished to suit the rest of the garden — lasts.

What happens if you delay

The cost of getting this wrong.

A pergola is only as good as the way it's anchored, sized and finished. Cut corners on any of those and it shows fast.

Risks of ignoring it

  • Posts twisting or pulling away from the patio in the first winter storm.
  • Sagging cross-beams under the weight of a canopy or climbing plant.
  • Rot at the base of posts that were never properly protected from wet ground.
  • Surface cabling for lighting because the electrics were left until last.
  • Tearing out a two-year-old budget structure and starting again.

Common mistakes

  • Buying a flatpack kit and bolting it down with no proper footings.
  • Using untreated softwood and skipping aftercare.
  • Undersizing posts and beams on a wide span.
  • Leaving lighting and power until after the build, then running visible surface cables.

Our process

How we deliver pergolas step by step.

£5m insured

£5m public liability and £5m employers' liability insurance on every job.

Specification & detail

The detail behind a pergolas job done properly.

Materials, methods and variations — what actually goes into a long-lasting build.

Custom-built, not catalogue

Every pergola is built bespoke to the property — we don't work from a fixed range or a kit. After the survey we agree the design, sizing, finish and any extras (lighting, power, screens) with you before we quote, so the structure suits your garden rather than the other way round.

Footings & anchoring

Pergolas built on top of a new patio get post anchors set into the build. Pergolas on an existing patio are surveyed for bearing capacity and anchored appropriately. If the existing patio isn't suitable, we'll tell you honestly rather than bolt a heavy structure onto something that can't take it.

Lighting, power & electrics

Any lighting, sockets or other electrical work is coordinated through our subcontracted electrician and designed in at the framing stage — so cabling is run out of sight rather than surface-mounted afterwards.

Part of a wider scheme

Most pergolas we build are part of a wider garden project — a new patio underneath, planting, side screens or coordination with a media wall or outdoor kitchen. Doing the whole zone together keeps the finish consistent and avoids retrofitting later.

How much does a pergola cost in West Sussex?+

Every pergola is priced after we see the space — in person or from photos with accurate measurements. Quotes are free and back to you the same or next day. We don't publish fixed prices online because every pergola is custom-built.

Are your pergolas built to a fixed range or design?+

No — every pergola is custom-built around the property and your requirements. We agree the design and spec with you on site before quoting.

Do I need planning permission for a pergola?+

In most domestic gardens in West Sussex, no — but listed buildings, conservation areas and front-garden installs need checking. We flag anything that needs a planning enquiry before quoting.

Do you handle the electrics for lighting and power?+

Yes — any electrical work is coordinated through our subcontracted electrician as part of the build, with cabling concealed in the structure.

Can you build a pergola over an existing patio?+

In most cases, yes. We survey the existing patio for bearing capacity before quoting. If it's not suitable, we'll tell you honestly.

Are you insured for pergola installation work in West Sussex?+

Yes — £5m public liability and £5m employers' liability insurance. We'll happily share the certificate before you sign. Every job comes with a 12-month workmanship guarantee. If something's down to our work, we'll come back and put it right. What it can't cover is the stuff outside our control once we've packed up and gone (like a slab getting chipped by a dropped plant pot). If it's our workmanship, it's covered.

Do you give written quotes for pergola installation?+

Yes. We price every pergola installation job after seeing it — either an in-person visit or photos with accurate measurements. Quotes are free and back to you the same or next day. We don't publish fixed prices online because every job is different.

How do I pay?+

Cash or bank transfer. A small booking fee (around £50) holds your spot in the diary. A 50% deposit is due about a week before we start, with the remaining 50% on completion. No large upfront deposit.

Are you open at weekends?+

Yes — we're open 7 days a week and respond same day, whichever day you call.

How quickly can you start a pergola installation project?+

Pergola installation work is typically scheduled within a few weeks of accepting the quote, sometimes sooner for smaller jobs. We work year-round.

Do you work outside Littlehampton?+

Yes — we regularly work in Worthing, Angmering, Chichester, Lancing, Rustington, East Preston, Brighton and the wider West Sussex. Postcode confirms eligibility in seconds on the phone.
