Service overview

What decking involves — and why it matters.

What it is

Bespoke timber and composite decking — ground-level platforms, raised decks with balustrades, multi-level zoned decks linking garden to lawn, and roof-top or balcony installations across West Sussex.

Who it's for

Homeowners who want usable outdoor living space on uneven or sloping ground, properties where a patio isn't possible due to access or weight, and anyone replacing a tired softwood deck from 10+ years ago.

When you need it

Build new when you need a level outdoor zone on a sloping garden, or replace any existing deck with soft boards underfoot, springy joists, mould between boards, or visible rot at the bearer points.

Why professional help matters

Most failed decks fail at the joists, not the surface. Untreated frames, no joist tape, no cavity ventilation, and bearers sitting directly on soil all cause the substructure to rot inside 5–7 years — long before the boards themselves are spent.

What happens if you delay

The cost of getting this wrong.

A deck is only as good as its frame. The boards on top are the cosmetic 10%.

Risks of ignoring it

  • Joists rotting from below within 5 years on damp, unventilated builds.
  • Boards cupping and splitting because the frame moved underneath them.
  • Slip injuries on green, untreated softwood decks in shaded gardens.
  • Balustrade failures on raised decks built without proper Building Regulations compliance.
  • Full rebuild cost in year 6 because the substructure was never specified properly.

Common mistakes

  • Skipping joist tape — the cheapest single upgrade with the biggest lifespan return.
  • Building flat on the ground with no airflow underneath the frame.
  • Using softwood deck boards in a north-facing, permanently shaded garden.
  • Spacing joists at 600mm centres for residential foot traffic — too far apart, causing bounce.

Our process

How we deliver decking step by step.

  1. 01

    Survey & design

We assess levels, drainage, ground conditions and your usage — dining, hot tub, sun-deck — to size the frame correctly.

  2. 02

    Written quote

Itemised: ground preparation, frame spec, board material, balustrades, fixings, finish.

  3. 03

    Ground prep & frame build

Membrane laid, concrete pads or screw piles installed, pressure-treated frame built at correct joist centres with joist tape on every top edge.

  4. 04

    Boards & detailing

Boards screwed (not nailed) with stainless or coated screws, end-grain sealed, picture-frame edges where specified.

  5. 05

    Balustrades, finish & handover

Balustrades fitted to Building Regs height where required, surface oiled/sealed if timber, walk-round and 12-month workmanship guarantee.

Benefits

Why homeowners across West Sussex choose us for decking.

Frame outlasts the boards

Joist tape and ventilation give the substructure a 20+ year design life.

No bounce underfoot

Joist centres at 400mm for composite, 350mm for hardwood — properly engineered.

Composite means zero maintenance

No sanding, no staining, no splinters, no greying.

Works on slopes

Decks solve sloping or uneven gardens where patios can't be laid level.

Anti-slip options

Grooved composite or anti-slip-strip retrofits for shaded gardens.

Defined outdoor zones

Multi-level decks create dining, lounging and hot-tub areas without walls.

Specification & detail

The detail behind a decking job done properly.

Materials, methods and variations — what actually goes into a long-lasting build.

Decking materials

Premium composite (Trex, Millboard, Saige) for zero-maintenance modern installs; Yellow Balau and Ipe hardwoods for premium long-life timber decks; Q-deck pressure-treated softwood for budget builds with realistic 8–12 year board life. Each has different fixing, ventilation and joist-spacing requirements.

Frame & substructure

C24 pressure-treated joists, joist tape (Tyvek or equivalent) on every top edge, galvanised or stainless fixings throughout, and either concrete pad foundations or steel ground-screw piles depending on soil and load. Hot-tub decks get a doubled frame and engineered load calc.

Raised decks & Building Regs

Decks over 600mm above ground need balustrades to 1100mm with infill spacing under 100mm. We design to comply, and on larger raised installs we coordinate with a structural engineer where the project warrants it.

Anti-slip & coastal weather

Properties along the West Sussex coast, including Littlehampton and Worthing, see year-round damp and salt air. We default to grooved composite or specify a slip-rated finish on timber, with stainless fixings to resist salt corrosion.

Aftercare

Composite needs an occasional brush and soapy wash. Timber needs an oil-based decking oil every 12–18 months and a re-sand every 4–5 years. We supply written aftercare specific to your board material.

How much does decking cost in West Sussex?+

Every deck is priced after we see the spot — in person or via photos with accurate measurements. Free quote, same or next day. Cost depends on board material (softwood, hardwood or composite), frame size, height off the ground, balustrades and access.

How long does a deck installation take?+

A typical 20–25m² ground-level deck takes 4–6 working days; a raised deck with balustrades and steps takes 7–10 days.

Will the deck be slippery in winter?+

Composite boards with a grooved or wire-brushed finish, and timber boards with anti-slip strips or correct annual oiling, stay safe year-round. Shaded north-facing gardens need composite or anti-slip retrofits.

Composite or timber — which lasts longer?+

Composite typically 25+ years with no resealing. Hardwood 20–25 years with oiling. Softwood 8–12 years with regular maintenance.

Do I need planning permission for a deck?+

Most ground-level and low-raised garden decks fall under permitted development. Raised decks over 300mm in some plots or any decking that increases overlooking may need consent — we flag this at the survey.

Can you build a deck around an existing hot tub?+

Yes — we design with the hot tub footprint, weight (often 2 tonnes filled), drainage and removable access panels for servicing built in from day one.

Are you insured for decking work in West Sussex?+

Yes — £5m public liability and £5m employers' liability insurance. We'll happily share the certificate before you sign. Every job comes with a 12-month workmanship guarantee. If something's down to our work, we'll come back and put it right. What it can't cover is the stuff outside our control once we've packed up and gone (like a slab getting chipped by a dropped plant pot). If it's our workmanship, it's covered.

Do you give written quotes for decking?+

Yes. We price every decking job after seeing it — either an in-person visit or photos with accurate measurements. Quotes are free and back to you the same or next day. We don't publish fixed prices online because every job is different.

How do I pay?+

Cash or bank transfer. A small booking fee (around £50) holds your spot in the diary. A 50% deposit is due about a week before we start, with the remaining 50% on completion. No large upfront deposit.

Are you open at weekends?+

Yes — we're open 7 days a week and respond same day, whichever day you call.

How quickly can you start a decking project?+

Decking work is typically scheduled within a few weeks of accepting the quote, sometimes sooner for smaller jobs. We work year-round.

Do you work outside Littlehampton?+

Yes — we regularly work in Worthing, Angmering, Chichester, Lancing, Rustington, East Preston, Brighton and the wider West Sussex. Postcode confirms eligibility in seconds on the phone.
