Service overview

What full garden design involves — and why it matters.

What it is

Complete garden transformation: site survey, scaled design, material selection, hardscape construction, soft landscaping, planting, lighting, irrigation and outdoor structures — managed and delivered by one team.

Who it's for

Homeowners in West Sussex planning a full back-garden overhaul, new-build owners receiving a builder-finish "garden" of compacted clay and a single fence, and clients tired of stitching together separate designers, builders and planters.

When you need it

Start any time — design phase runs through winter while build works happen in spring through autumn. Properties planning extensions should engage us early so the garden integrates with the new architecture.

Why professional help matters

Most "designed" gardens fail at the seam between designer and contractor. A designer hands over a plan, a builder interprets it, planting falls to a third party. Levels move, drainage is forgotten, lighting is bolted on afterward. We design and build under one roof so the garden you sign off is the garden you get.

What happens if you delay

The cost of getting this wrong.

Splitting design and build across multiple firms is the single most expensive mistake homeowners make on a garden project.

Risks of ignoring it

  • Design that can't actually be built within the budget — wasted design fees.
  • Drainage and levels forgotten in the design, paid for as extras during the build.
  • Planting bought-in by a third party that dies in the first year because soil prep was wrong.
  • Lighting and irrigation retrofitted after hardscape goes in — expensive and ugly.
  • No single party accountable for the finished garden working as a whole.

Common mistakes

  • Engaging a designer without confirming a builder who can execute the plan.
  • Letting a generalist contractor "wing it" without scaled drawings.
  • Buying expensive plants before the irrigation and soil are sorted.
  • Treating outdoor lighting as an afterthought — it's the single biggest evening-mood lever.

Our process

How we deliver full garden design step by step.

  1. 01

    Discovery & site survey

We walk the garden with you, take measurements and levels, photograph orientation and shade, and discuss how you want to use the space.

  2. 02

    Concept & CAD plan

Design is in-house. We produce a scaled 2D plan plus material moodboards covering hardscape, planting zones, lighting and any structures. We're equally happy working to a plan your own designer has already produced — we'll cost, sequence and build to those drawings.

  3. 03

    Written build quote

Free, always. Once the design (ours or yours) is signed off, we send a clear written quote covering every trade — same or next day after the visit.

  4. 04

    Build & coordination

Drainage and groundworks are handled in-house — no waiting on outside crews. Our 2–4 team led by Connor delivers the hardscape and planting; electrics are coordinated through our trusted subcontracted electricians.

  5. 05

    Planting, handover & guarantee

Planting goes in last, you receive a written maintenance plan, and we back the workmanship with a 12-month guarantee.

Benefits

Why homeowners across West Sussex choose us for full garden design.

One accountable team

No designer-vs-builder finger-pointing — one quote, one timeline, one guarantee.

Design that's actually buildable

Designed in-house by the people building it — so we never draw what we can't deliver within the agreed budget.

Happy to build to your plans

Got drawings from an existing designer? We'll cost, sequence and build them with the same in-house team.

Drainage & groundworks in-house

No third-party groundworkers, no scope-gap extras. We dig, drain and base the whole project ourselves.

Coordinated trades

Electrician (subcontracted), plant supplier and any specialist suppliers all sequenced correctly so nothing gets ripped out and redone.

Specification & detail

The detail behind a full garden design job done properly.

Materials, methods and variations — what actually goes into a long-lasting build.

Design phase deliverables

Scaled 2D site plan, key elevations or sections where useful, planting plan with named species and quantities, lighting plan with circuit zones, hardscape material schedule, and a written specification. Revisions are included in the design fee. If you already have a designer's plans, we'll cost and build to those instead — no design fee required.

Drainage & groundworks (in-house)

Excavation, sub-base, French drains, soakaways, retaining walls and levels are all handled by our own team. That means one accountable point of contact for the bit of the project that goes wrong on most gardens.

Hardscape integration

Patios, paths, retaining walls, steps, raised planters, pergolas, garden offices, outdoor kitchens and media walls — all designed in from the start with their drainage, levels and electrical needs sorted before excavation begins.

Planting & soft landscaping

Climate-appropriate planting for the West Sussex coast — drought-tolerant species for sandy soils near Littlehampton, structural plants for windier coastal plots, shade-tolerant schemes for north-facing town gardens in Worthing and Brighton.

Lighting & electrics

Low-voltage LED garden lighting on timer or app control, integrated into hardscape during the build. Weatherproof power for hot tubs, outdoor kitchens or garden offices — all coordinated through our trusted subcontracted electricians.

Long-term partnership

After handover we offer a maintenance visit programme — seasonal pruning, planting renewal, lighting servicing, pressure-washing — so the garden still looks like the day it was finished in year five.

FAQ

Still unsure? Call 07743 066824 for a same-day answer.

How much does a full garden design and build cost in West Sussex?+

Every full garden project is priced after we visit and walk the space. Budget varies enormously depending on hard-landscaping, levels, retaining, planting and outdoor structures — we discuss budget openly at the first meeting before any design work begins. Free initial consultation.

How long does a full garden project take?+

Design phase 3–6 weeks. Build phase 4–12 weeks depending on scale. Total project elapsed time 3–6 months from first meeting to handover.

Do you offer just design without the build?+

Occasionally, yes — but our value is in the integrated delivery. Most design-only enquiries we redirect to specialist design practices.

Can you work around an extension or building project?+

Yes — we regularly sequence behind builders so the garden integrates with new architecture. Engaging us early lets us coordinate levels, drainage and access with the builders.

What about ongoing maintenance?+

We offer a paid seasonal maintenance programme — pruning, planting refresh, lighting servicing, pressure washing — to protect your investment.

Do you handle planning applications?+

For structures requiring planning (garden offices over permitted-development limits, etc.) we coordinate with a local planning consultant and include their fee in the quote.

Are you insured for garden design work in West Sussex?+

Yes — £5m public liability and £5m employers' liability insurance. We'll happily share the certificate before you sign. Every job comes with a 12-month workmanship guarantee. If something's down to our work, we'll come back and put it right. What it can't cover is the stuff outside our control once we've packed up and gone (like a slab getting chipped by a dropped plant pot). If it's our workmanship, it's covered.

Do you give written quotes for garden design?+

Yes. We price every garden design job after seeing it — either an in-person visit or photos with accurate measurements. Quotes are free and back to you the same or next day. We don't publish fixed prices online because every job is different.

How do I pay?+

Cash or bank transfer. A small booking fee (around £50) holds your spot in the diary. A 50% deposit is due about a week before we start, with the remaining 50% on completion. No large upfront deposit.

Are you open at weekends?+

Yes — we're open 7 days a week and respond same day, whichever day you call.

How quickly can you start a garden design project?+

Garden design work is typically scheduled within a few weeks of accepting the quote, sometimes sooner for smaller jobs. We work year-round.

Do you work outside Littlehampton?+

Yes — we regularly work in Worthing, Angmering, Chichester, Lancing, Rustington, East Preston, Brighton and the wider West Sussex. Postcode confirms eligibility in seconds on the phone.
