Service overview

What turf involves — and why it matters.

What it is

Full lawn renovation or new lawn establishment: strip out, soil preparation, levelling, fertilising and laying of cultivated premium turf rolls, with a written 30-day aftercare plan.

Who it's for

Homeowners with patchy, moss-ridden or builder-finish lawns in Littlehampton and across West Sussex, new-build owners receiving compacted clay sub-soil instead of a proper lawn, and anyone reshaping their garden after landscaping work.

When you need it

Best laid March–May or September–October when ground temperatures support root establishment. Summer turfing is possible with strict daily watering; winter laying works in mild spells.

Why professional help matters

Turf is only as good as the soil under it. Lay premium turf onto compacted, weed-rooted, builder-grade soil and you'll see yellow patches and weed bleed-through within weeks. Proper soil preparation — strip, rotovate, screen, level, fertilise — is 80% of the job.

What happens if you delay

The cost of getting this wrong.

A new turf lawn that fails establishment in the first 30 days almost always fails because of what's underneath.

Risks of ignoring it

  • Yellow joints and bare patches where turf rolls dried out unevenly in the first fortnight.
  • Bumpy, uneven lawn that can't be mowed cleanly because the soil was never screened or levelled.
  • Existing weeds and couch grass coming back through the new turf within months.
  • Soil compaction below the root zone meaning the lawn never deep-roots and stays patchy forever.
  • Wasted spend on premium turf laid onto soil that needed a full overhaul first.

Common mistakes

  • Laying turf onto existing lawn without stripping and de-thatching first.
  • Skipping the rotovation step on heavy clay West Sussex soils.
  • Not pre-fertilising — turf burns through topsoil nutrients in 2–3 weeks.
  • Underwatering in the first 14 days and writing off the establishment.

Our process

How we deliver turf step by step.

  1. 01

    Survey & soil assessment

We test soil type, compaction, drainage and shade, and confirm whether topsoil import is needed.

  2. 02

    Written quote

Itemised: strip out, rotovation, topsoil import (if required), levelling, turf spec, aftercare plan.

  3. 03

    Soil preparation

Existing lawn stripped, soil rotovated to 100–150mm, weeds and stones removed, fresh screened topsoil imported where needed, levelled and pre-fertilised.

  4. 04

    Turf laid

Cultivated turf rolls laid in brickwork-pattern offset joints, butted tight with no gaps, edges trimmed clean.

  5. 05

    Roll, water & handover

Lawn rolled to ensure root contact, soaked thoroughly, and a written 30-day watering and first-mow plan handed over.

Specification & detail

The detail behind a turf job done properly.

Materials, methods and variations — what actually goes into a long-lasting build.

Turf varieties

Cultivated rye-fescue blends for family lawns (hard-wearing, fast-establishing, year-round colour); shade-tolerant fescue blends for north-facing or tree-shaded gardens; ornamental fine-leaf turf for show lawns where heavy use isn't expected.

Soil preparation

Heavy West Sussex clay soils almost always need rotovation, drainage assessment and topsoil import to a 100mm depth minimum. Sandy coastal soils near Littlehampton benefit from organic-matter addition and more aggressive fertilising.

Drainage

Where existing lawns puddle in winter, we install French drains, raised soil profiles or specify a sand-amended root zone. Persistent waterlogging is rarely solved by turf alone and we'll be honest about it.

Aftercare

Days 1–14: water heavily morning and evening. Days 15–30: reduce gradually, light first mow at 25mm above the soil. Months 2–6: full mowing routine, monthly feed in growing season, autumn scarification.

When NOT to lay turf

If the garden is permanently shaded, has pet-urine concentration zones, or sees vehicle parking, artificial grass or hard landscaping is the honest answer — we'll tell you that at the survey rather than take your money.

How much does turfing cost in West Sussex?+

Priced after we see the garden — in person or via photos with accurate measurements. Free quote, same or next day. Cost depends on size, strip-out work, soil import and access.

How long does it take to lay a new lawn?+

A 60–100m² lawn is usually a 1–2 day job from strip-out to final roll.

When can I walk on the new turf?+

Light foot traffic from day 3–5; normal use from week 4 once roots have knitted into the soil.

When should I first mow?+

Around day 14, blades set high at roughly 25mm. We supply a written aftercare schedule with exact timings.

Will the turf survive a hot summer?+

Yes, with daily morning watering for the first 14 days. Established turf handles West Sussex summers fine with weekly deep watering.

Can you remove the old lawn?+

Yes — strip-out and licensed disposal are included in the written quote.

Are you insured for turf laying work in West Sussex?+

Yes — £5m public liability and £5m employers' liability insurance. We'll happily share the certificate before you sign. Every job comes with a 12-month workmanship guarantee. If something's down to our work, we'll come back and put it right. What it can't cover is the stuff outside our control once we've packed up and gone (like a slab getting chipped by a dropped plant pot). If it's our workmanship, it's covered.

Do you give written quotes for turf laying?+

Yes. We price every turf laying job after seeing it — either an in-person visit or photos with accurate measurements. Quotes are free and back to you the same or next day. We don't publish fixed prices online because every job is different.

How do I pay?+

Cash or bank transfer. A small booking fee (around £50) holds your spot in the diary. A 50% deposit is due about a week before we start, with the remaining 50% on completion. No large upfront deposit.

Are you open at weekends?+

Yes — we're open 7 days a week and respond same day, whichever day you call.

How quickly can you start a turf laying project?+

Turf laying work is typically scheduled within a few weeks of accepting the quote, sometimes sooner for smaller jobs. We work year-round.

Do you work outside Littlehampton?+

Yes — we regularly work in Worthing, Angmering, Chichester, Lancing, Rustington, East Preston, Brighton and the wider West Sussex. Postcode confirms eligibility in seconds on the phone.
