Service overview

What patios involves — and why it matters.

What it is

A patio is far more than the slabs on top — it's the engineered platform underneath. We build full-spec porcelain, Indian sandstone, granite and natural-stone patios that drain properly, sit dead flat, and stay locked into their joints season after season.

Who it's for

Homeowners in West Sussex who are tired of cheap pointed-up patios from previous landscapers, and anyone planning an outdoor kitchen, hot tub, dining zone or full garden redesign that needs a permanent surface they can trust.

When you need it

Spring through autumn is ideal for natural stone; porcelain can be laid year-round once frost risk is managed. Replace any existing patio showing sinking, cracked pointing, lifted slabs, standing water, weeds through the joints, or movement at the house wall.

Why professional help matters

A DIY or budget patio installed on sharp sand and dot-and-dab mortar will lift, rock and stain within two winters. A properly built patio uses a compacted MOT Type 1 sub-base, a full mortar bed, primed slabs and a flexible jointing compound — none of which are visible, but all of which decide whether you're calling someone back in 18 months.

What happens if you delay

The cost of getting this wrong.

Most failed patios in West Sussex aren't failing because of the slab — they're failing because of what's hidden under it.

Risks of ignoring it

  • Standing water against the house wall causing damp and bridged DPC, which costs thousands to remediate.
  • Slabs rocking and cracking as the sub-base settles unevenly under foot traffic and furniture.
  • Joints opening up, weeds taking hold, and ants tunnelling out the bedding sand within two seasons.
  • Slip hazards on shaded, mossy slabs that were never sealed or were laid below the required falls.
  • Re-lay costs in year three that exceed the price of doing it properly the first time.

Common mistakes

  • Hiring on price alone and getting a sub-base half the required depth.
  • Letting a generalist builder lay porcelain without primer or the correct slurry mix.
  • Skipping linear drainage at the house wall to "save money".
  • Accepting "spot bedding" (dot-and-dab) instead of a full mortar bed.

Our process

How we deliver patios step by step.

  1. 01

    Free on-site survey

We walk the site with you in Littlehampton or your local West Sussex town, take levels, check existing drainage and discuss layout, materials and budget honestly.

  2. 02

    Written quote

You receive an itemised quote covering excavation, sub-base depth, edge restraint, slab spec, jointing compound and aftercare — no day-rate surprises.

  3. 03

    Excavation & sub-base

We dig to depth, install a geotextile membrane where required, then compact MOT Type 1 in layered lifts using a plate compactor — never tipped and walked-in.

  4. 04

    Laying & jointing

Slabs are primed (where the material demands it) and bedded on a full wet-mix mortar to the correct falls, then jointed with a brush-in polymeric or slurry compound matched to the stone.

  5. 05

    Sealing, handover & guarantee

Natural stone is sealed if specified, the patio is washed down, you get a walk-round and a written 12-month workmanship guarantee.

Benefits

Why homeowners across West Sussex choose us for patios.

Stays flat for years

Engineered sub-base and full mortar bed mean no rocking slabs, no sinking corners, no re-lays.

Drains away from the house

Correct falls (1:80 minimum) and linear drainage where needed protect your brickwork and DPC.

Lower long-term cost

One properly built patio outlasts two cheap ones — and looks better the whole way through.

Adds resale value

A premium patio is one of the highest-ROI garden upgrades in the West Sussex market.

Frost & stain resistant

Sealed natural stone and vitrified porcelain shrug off wine, BBQ grease and West Sussex winters.

One accountable team

Same crew from dig to handover — no subcontractor finger-pointing if something needs adjusting.

Specification & detail

The detail behind a patios job done properly.

Materials, methods and variations — what actually goes into a long-lasting build.

Materials we install

Vitrified porcelain (20mm exterior-grade) for low-maintenance modern gardens; Indian sandstone in raj green, kandla grey, mint and modak for traditional homes; Yorkshire stone and granite setts for character properties; and limestone for contemporary minimalist schemes. We'll talk you through slip ratings, porosity and sealing requirements for each.

Sub-base & drainage

Domestic patios get a 100–150mm compacted MOT Type 1 sub-base. Patios bearing hot tubs, outdoor kitchens or vehicle overrun get 150–200mm with reinforced edges. We design falls away from the house at 1:80 minimum and add ACO linear drainage at thresholds, French drains in heavy clay soils, and soakaways where SuDS guidance requires it.

Patio variations & combined builds

Sunken patios, raised terraces with retaining walls, stepped multi-level patios linking lawn to outbuilding, fire-pit zones, integrated planters, in-slab lighting runs, and patio + pergola or media-wall combinations. We coordinate electrics with our subcontracted electrician where lighting or outdoor sockets are involved.

Residential vs commercial

Most of our patio work is residential across West Sussex, but we also build courtyards and outdoor seating areas for pubs, restaurants and small offices in Littlehampton, Worthing and Chichester. Commercial builds use thicker sub-base, anti-slip-rated material and accessible level thresholds.

Aftercare

Sealed patios need a wash every 6–12 months with a pH-neutral cleaner. Re-sealing on natural stone is typically every 3–5 years. We supply a written aftercare sheet and can return for a paid annual service if you'd rather not handle it yourself.

How much does a new patio cost in West Sussex?+

Every patio is priced after we see it — either an in-person visit or photos with accurate measurements. Quotes are free and back to you the same or next day. Cost depends on slab spec, access, excavation depth and drainage requirements, so we don't publish fixed prices online.

How long does a patio installation take?+

A typical 30–40m² garden patio takes 5–8 working days from breaking ground to handover. Larger multi-level builds with retaining walls or drainage runs take 2–3 weeks. We confirm dates upfront and stick to them.

Porcelain or natural stone — which should I choose?+

Porcelain is virtually maintenance-free, frost and stain proof, and ideal for contemporary homes. Indian sandstone and Yorkshire stone give a warmer, traditional character but need sealing every few years. We'll walk you through both at the survey.

Will my new patio drain properly?+

Yes. Every patio we build is laid to a minimum 1:80 fall away from the house, with ACO linear drainage at thresholds where the levels demand it. Standing water is the single biggest cause of patio failure and we engineer it out from day one.

How long will the patio last?+

A correctly built porcelain or natural-stone patio on a full sub-base should comfortably last 25+ years. We build our patios to stay flat and joint-tight for years, and back the workmanship with a written 12-month guarantee.

Can you remove and dispose of my old patio?+

Yes — full excavation, breakout and licensed waste disposal are included in the written quote. Nothing left for you to deal with.

Are you insured for patio installation work in West Sussex?+

Yes — £5m public liability and £5m employers' liability insurance. We'll happily share the certificate before you sign. Every job comes with a 12-month workmanship guarantee. If something's down to our work, we'll come back and put it right. What it can't cover is the stuff outside our control once we've packed up and gone (like a slab getting chipped by a dropped plant pot). If it's our workmanship, it's covered.

Do you give written quotes for patio installation?+

Yes. We price every patio installation job after seeing it — either an in-person visit or photos with accurate measurements. Quotes are free and back to you the same or next day. We don't publish fixed prices online because every job is different.

How do I pay?+

Cash or bank transfer. A small booking fee (around £50) holds your spot in the diary. A 50% deposit is due about a week before we start, with the remaining 50% on completion. No large upfront deposit.

Are you open at weekends?+

Yes — we're open 7 days a week and respond same day, whichever day you call.

How quickly can you start a patio installation project?+

Patio installation work is typically scheduled within a few weeks of accepting the quote, sometimes sooner for smaller jobs. We work year-round.

Do you work outside Littlehampton?+

Yes — we regularly work in Worthing, Angmering, Chichester, Lancing, Rustington, East Preston, Brighton and the wider West Sussex. Postcode confirms eligibility in seconds on the phone.
