Service overview

What driveways involves — and why it matters.

What it is

Full-spec residential driveways: block paving, permeable block paving, resin-bound, tarmac/asphalt and printed concrete. Engineered sub-base, proper edge restraint, integrated drainage and tidy reinstatement of any disturbed footpath.

Who it's for

Homeowners in West Sussex replacing cracked tarmac, sinking block paving or unusable shingle driveways, and anyone widening their drive to fit a second vehicle.

When you need it

Replace any driveway with rutting, ponding water, weeds through the joints, cracked tarmac, sinking blocks or a missing edge restraint. Don't delay if water is running back toward the house wall.

Why professional help matters

Driveways take vehicle weight, not foot traffic. A residential patio sub-base will fail under a 1.8-tonne family car within months. Driveways need 150–200mm compacted Type 1 sub-base, a proper edge restraint that won't move, and SuDS-compliant drainage to comply with current planning rules.

What happens if you delay

The cost of getting this wrong.

A driveway failing is a slow-motion expense — it gets worse every month you leave it.

Risks of ignoring it

  • Surface water running back to the house and bridging the DPC, causing internal damp.
  • Sunken tracks where the car parks, leading to chassis damage on uneven ramps.
  • Trip hazards from lifted block paving that expose you to insurance claims.
  • Planning enforcement letters for non-SuDS-compliant impermeable driveways over 5m².
  • Doubling the cost of repair in year three vs. doing it properly today.

Common mistakes

  • Laying blocks on a 50mm sub-base "because the existing surface is solid".
  • Skipping the concrete edge haunch — blocks creep outward and the driveway collapses inward.
  • Pouring resin onto cracked tarmac that should have been excavated and replaced.
  • Ignoring SuDS rules and getting a planning enforcement notice 18 months later.

Our process

How we deliver driveways step by step.

  1. 01

    Survey & drainage check

We assess existing levels, soakaway capacity, vehicle access and any kerb dropping needed with the local authority.

  2. 02

    Written quote

Itemised: excavation, sub-base depth, edge restraint, drainage system, surface material, footpath reinstatement.

  3. 03

    Excavation & sub-base

Dig to depth (typically 250–300mm total), geotextile membrane, MOT Type 1 compacted in 75mm lifts to a structural finish.

  4. 04

    Edges, drainage & surface

Concrete-haunched edge restraint, ACO linear drains where required, then the chosen surface — blocks laid on screed bed, tarmac in two-coat hot lay, or resin-bound trowel finish.

  5. 05

    Snag, sweep & handover

Kiln-dried sand brushed in (block paving), full site clean, walk-round and 12-month workmanship guarantee.

Benefits

Why homeowners across West Sussex choose us for driveways.

Survives daily vehicle use

Engineered sub-base means no rutting, no sinking, no surface failure.

SuDS-compliant by default

We drain to soakaway or permeable surfacing — keeping you legal and protecting your home.

Adds kerb appeal & resale value

A new driveway is one of the highest-visibility upgrades a West Sussex property can have.

Tight edges that don't creep

Concrete-haunched edging holds the whole driveway together for the long term.

Wider parking, easier access

Combined with kerb dropping where needed for a second car or van.

Lower long-term cost

One properly built driveway outlasts two re-laid budget jobs.

Specification & detail

The detail behind a driveways job done properly.

Materials, methods and variations — what actually goes into a long-lasting build.

Surface materials

Standard concrete block paving in 60mm thickness for residential drives, permeable block paving (Marshalls Drivesett Tegula Priora and equivalents) where SuDS compliance matters, clay paviours for character properties, resin-bound for a contemporary low-maintenance finish, and two-coat hot tarmac for budget driveways and shared accesses.

Sub-base & drainage

Residential driveways get a 150–200mm compacted MOT Type 1 sub-base over a geotextile membrane. Drainage uses ACO linear channels at thresholds, gulley pots to existing surface-water systems, or full soakaway design where the property has no available stormwater connection. Permeable surfaces eliminate the surface-water issue entirely.

Edge restraint

Every driveway is edged with a concrete-haunched kerb, brick edging course, or PCC kerb depending on aesthetic. Without it, vehicle loading pushes the perimeter outward and the centre sinks — the most common cause of failure.

Kerb dropping & planning

Where you need a new vehicle crossover, we'll guide you through the local authority dropped-kerb application (Arun, Adur, Worthing and Chichester District Councils all run their own approval process). Driveways over 5m² in impermeable surfaces require planning permission unless drainage is to a permeable area within the property.

Residential vs commercial

Most of our driveway work is residential, but we also surface small commercial parking areas in Littlehampton and Worthing. Commercial builds use thicker sub-base, heavier-spec blocks or modified-bitumen tarmac, and accessible drainage.

FAQ

Driveways questions, straight answers.

Still unsure? Call 07743 066824 for a same-day answer.

How much does a new driveway cost in West Sussex?+

We price every driveway after an on-site visit — there are too many variables (excavation depth, sub-base, drainage, dropped kerbs, surface material) to give a meaningful number over the phone. Free quote, back to you the same or next day.

How long does a driveway installation take?+

An average front driveway (40–60m²) takes 5–8 working days. Larger driveways with drainage works and kerb dropping take 2–3 weeks.

Do I need planning permission?+

If the new surface is impermeable and over 5m², yes — unless drainage runs to a permeable area within the property boundary. We design to comply and avoid the planning issue entirely.

Can you drop the kerb?+

We coordinate the dropped-kerb application with West Sussex County Council Highways and arrange the works with an approved contractor.

How long will the driveway last?+

A correctly built block paving driveway lasts 25+ years; resin-bound 15–20 years; tarmac 12–18 years. All come with a written 12-month workmanship guarantee.

Will weeds grow through the joints?+

Kiln-dried sand brushed into block paving joints, or polymeric jointing on premium installs, eliminates weed germination for years. Resin-bound is inherently weed-proof.

Are you insured for driveway installation work in West Sussex?+

Yes — £5m public liability and £5m employers' liability insurance. We'll happily share the certificate before you sign. Every job comes with a 12-month workmanship guarantee. If something's down to our work, we'll come back and put it right. What it can't cover is the stuff outside our control once we've packed up and gone (like a slab getting chipped by a dropped plant pot). If it's our workmanship, it's covered.

Do you give written quotes for driveway installation?+

Yes. We price every driveway installation job after seeing it — either an in-person visit or photos with accurate measurements. Quotes are free and back to you the same or next day. We don't publish fixed prices online because every job is different.

How do I pay?+

Cash or bank transfer. A small booking fee (around £50) holds your spot in the diary. A 50% deposit is due about a week before we start, with the remaining 50% on completion. No large upfront deposit.

Are you open at weekends?+

Yes — we're open 7 days a week and respond same day, whichever day you call.

How quickly can you start a driveway installation project?+

Driveway installation work is typically scheduled within a few weeks of accepting the quote, sometimes sooner for smaller jobs. We work year-round.

Do you work outside Littlehampton?+

Yes — we regularly work in Worthing, Angmering, Chichester, Lancing, Rustington, East Preston, Brighton and the wider West Sussex. Postcode confirms eligibility in seconds on the phone.
